Dealing With Pre-Race Half Marathon Jitters

5 years ago almost to the day, I ran my first half marathon. Now, I’m just two days away from running what could possibly be my last road half.

Of course I have some concrete goals for myself (because you know how much I love goals). But something is different about this race…

I’m not flipping my sh$t and full of anxiety.

Maybe it’s because other areas of my life are sucking up all the anxiety and there isn’t enough left for this race. But that’s not fun, so instead I’m saying it’s due to adulting.

Over the past 5 years, I’ve grown up and realized that a race doesn’t define me or my abilities. Smart, huh?

(From my first half marathon. So young!)

I used to get worked up, become jittery, and take training so seriously.

The me today? It’s not worth it.

I run later, I run less, and I love it more.

This isn’t to say that nerves don’t exist, they do. But the way I see it is this…

“What does being anxious about a race accomplish?”

Will it make me run faster? No. Actually, it can hurt my performance.

So instead…

I’m visualizing the race, reminding myself of how much speed work I have done, going over the miles I’ve knocked out on the weekends, and telling myself that I’m as prepared as I am going to be. Training is behind me and all that is left is Sunday’s race!

I will post up our trip on Instagram! This race is always an excuse for Dan and I to let loose and have sometimes way too much fun.

Circuit part of Weekend Warrior Workout (minus the mile). I set a timer for 40 minutes to see how many reps I could get! I was able to complete all the jumping jacks, all burpees, and over half of everything else!

Thursday:

Push-up Burner with Alex!

We took turns between doing push-ups and doing a circuit (when one of us finished the circuit, we switched) to see how many push-ups we could get within the 45 minutes.

1 Person Push-Ups
Other Person Completes The Following:
5 Ground Snatches/Side
5 HSPU
5 Deadlifts
2 Sled Pushes (100 ft total)
Second 15 Minutes:
1 Person Push-Ups
Other Person:
5 Pullups
10 Box Jumps
1 Lap Plated Bear Runs (100 ft total)
Total Pushup Count: 615

Friday:

Quick Rock Climbing before heading out of town!

What about a taper?

I know I should taper a bit more. But I do make sure to go light the week of a big race. During our workout Thursday, I stuck to very low weights to ensure I wouldn’t burn my legs out.

Tell me… do you get anxious before events like races?
